Drop Your PNG Here

Lower means a smaller file. 80 to 90 looks the same to most eyes.

To convert PNG to WebP, drop the PNG in, set the quality, and click Convert to WebP. You get a much smaller image that keeps its transparent background. It runs in your browser, and the page shows how much you saved.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and lighter images load sooner. That helps visitors and speed scores like Largest Contentful Paint.

  • Hero and banner images that slow the top of a page.
  • Logos and product cutouts, where you need transparency that JPG can't keep.
  • Screenshots in help articles.
  • Visitors on slow mobile connections.

Keep your PNG as a master copy. WebP is the version you publish, not the one you edit.

How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Click Select File, or drag a PNG into the drop zone.
  2. Set the WebP quality. 90 is a safe starting point.
  3. Click Convert to WebP, check the size and preview, then click Download.

Quality settings and what to expect

Use 85 to 90 for logos and interface graphics with sharp edges, and 75 to 85 for big decorative images. Lower the slider until you can just see a change, then go one step back up. At 100 you get the best fidelity your browser offers, and the file is bigger.

A tiny PNG made of flat colors can come out the same size, or even larger. The page shows the exact change, so you can keep whichever file is better.

Browser support and limits

WebP output works in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Safari can open WebP but can't create it from a web page, so the tool warns you rather than giving you a mislabeled file. Every current browser can display WebP, but some email programs and print services can't use it, and WebP to PNG turns it back.

Other steps: shrink further with Image Compressor, or convert photos with JPG to WebP. Our article on why sites reject WebP covers compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports transparency like PNG, so see-through areas stay see-through.

Will the WebP always be smaller than my PNG?

Usually, and often by a lot for screenshots and detailed graphics. A tiny, flat-color PNG may not shrink, and the page will tell you.

Is this conversion lossless?

It's lossy at most settings, which is how the size savings happen. If you need identical pixels, keep the PNG.

What quality should I use for a website?

Start at 85 to 90 for logos and graphics, and 75 to 85 for large images. Compare with the original and go as low as looks good.

Why does the page say my browser can't create WebP?

Safari can't save WebP from a web page. Use Chrome, Edge, or Firefox for this tool.

Do you keep a copy of my PNG?

No. It's converted on your device and nothing is sent to a server.
