To edit PDF metadata, open the file, change the title, author, subject, or keywords in the form, and click Save Updated PDF. You can also clear every field before sharing. It all happens in your browser.
What is PDF metadata?
Metadata is information stored inside a PDF that isn't part of the visible pages. It includes the title, author, subject, keywords, the app that created the document, and the creation and modification dates.
You see some of it without noticing. The title shows in your browser tab, and document managers and search tools use the rest to organize files.
Why edit a PDF's metadata?
- Fix a wrong title, like Untitled or an old draft name, that shows in the tab and in search results.
- Remove your name or your employer's name from the author field before sharing.
- Add a clear title, subject, and keywords to a document you publish.
- Keep a folder of reports and scans consistent and easy to search.
How to edit PDF metadata
- Click Select File, or drag a PDF into the drop zone. Its current metadata appears in the form.
- Edit any field, or click Clear All Fields to remove everything. Separate keywords with commas.
- Click Save Updated PDF, then Download the new file.
What changes and what does not
Only the information fields change. Your pages, text, and images are left exactly as they were. The last-modified date updates to when you save, and the creation date stays.
Some PDFs also carry a second copy of the metadata in a format called XMP, and certain viewers read that copy first. When your file has one, a checkbox lets you remove it so your edits are the only version left. That also removes anything else stored in it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the title of a PDF?
Open the PDF here, edit the Title field, and save. The new title shows in the browser tab and in most PDF viewers. It's separate from the file name.
How do I remove the author name from a PDF?
Empty the Author field, or click Clear All Fields, then save. If the file has an XMP copy, leave the removal box ticked so the old name doesn't survive there.
What information does a PDF store about me?
Often the title, author, subject, keywords, the creating app, and dates. Many programs fill in the author automatically from your computer or account name.
Does editing metadata change the pages?
No. Only the information fields change, and pages, text, and images stay the same.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
Not if it needs a password to open. If it only blocks printing or copying, try Unlock PDF first.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is read and saved in your browser, so it never reaches a server.
