Drop Your AVIF Here

To convert AVIF to JPG, drop the .avif file in, click Convert to JPG, and download it. JPG opens in every app and upload form. It runs in your browser, so the image isn't uploaded.

What is an AVIF file, and why won't it open?

AVIF is a modern image format built on video compression technology. It makes photos much smaller than JPG at similar quality, so websites increasingly serve it, and saving a picture from the web can leave you with a .avif file.

Support hasn't caught up everywhere. Many editors, email programs, print services, and upload forms still show a blank preview or reject the file.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Click Select File, or drag your .avif image into the drop zone.
  2. Click Convert to JPG.
  3. Check the preview, then click Download.

Which browsers can open AVIF?

The tool relies on your browser to read AVIF. That works in Chrome 85 and newer, Edge 121 and newer, Firefox 93 and newer, and Safari 16.4 and newer. On an older browser, the page warns you first. Update it or open the page in another browser.

The JPG is usually larger than the AVIF, since AVIF is so efficient. Transparent areas turn white, and an animated AVIF saves only its first frame. Very bright or HDR colors can look a bit flatter, because JPG is standard 8-bit.

After converting

  • Make the JPG smaller with Image Compressor.
  • Need to keep a transparent background? JPG can't hold one, so use an editor that saves PNG.
  • Going the other way to save space? JPG to AVIF makes smaller photos.

AVIF, WebP, or JPG: what is the difference?

All three are photo formats, and they trade size against support. AVIF makes the smallest files but is the newest, so some software can't read it yet. WebP is smaller than JPG and works in every current browser, though some editors still reject it. JPG is the oldest and the biggest of the three, and it opens everywhere.

That's why AVIF shows up on websites while JPG stays the safe choice for sharing. If you'd like a middle ground for your own site, JPG to WebP is a good option.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an AVIF file?

Convert it to JPG here, then open the JPG in any app. Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari can also display AVIF directly.

Why does my browser say it can't open the AVIF file?

It's probably too old. AVIF works in Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16.4+. Update, or try another browser.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?

Almost always. AVIF is one of the most efficient formats, so the same picture takes more space as JPG.

What happens to transparency?

JPG has none, so transparent areas are filled with white. For transparency, convert to PNG with an editor instead.

Does it work on animated AVIF files?

Only the first frame is saved, since JPG can't animate.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the AVIF and saves the JPG on your own device.
