Drop Your BMP Here

To convert BMP to JPG, drop the bitmap in, click Convert to JPG, and download the file. It's usually 90 percent smaller or more, so it fits in email and upload forms. It runs in your browser, with no upload.

Why are BMP files so big?

BMP, short for bitmap, stores the color of every pixel with little or no compression. A 1920 by 1080 picture takes about 6 MB as a 24-bit BMP no matter what's in it, while the same picture is often a few hundred kilobytes as a JPG.

Microsoft Paint and older screenshot tools saved BMP files by default for years, which is why they still turn up in old folders and email attachments.

How to convert BMP to JPG

  1. Click Select File, or drag a .bmp file into the drop zone.
  2. Click Convert to JPG.
  3. Compare the file sizes, check the preview, then click Download.

What to expect

Photos and screenshots typically shrink by 90 percent or more. A palette-based BMP shrinks less. The JPG is saved at 92 percent quality, and any transparent area is filled with white. Modern browsers open BMP files natively, so no plugin is needed.

For a screenshot with sharp text where you want no quality loss at all, PNG is a better target than JPG. Use Image Converter to pick PNG.

Common uses and next steps

  • Email and uploads. Many sites reject BMP or cap the size a bitmap easily passes.
  • Storage. Old BMP collections shrink to a fraction as JPG.
  • Combine images into one document with Image to PDF.
  • Shrink further with Image Compressor.

BMP, JPG, or PNG: which one should you keep?

  • JPG is the best choice for photos and anything you plan to email or upload. It's small and works everywhere.
  • PNG is better for screenshots, diagrams, and pictures with sharp text, because it stays perfectly crisp. It's still far smaller than BMP.
  • BMP is rarely the right format today. Keep it only when an old program requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my BMP file so big?

BMP stores every pixel with no compression, so a normal picture takes several megabytes.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

Usually 90 to 98 percent smaller for photos and screenshots. The page shows the exact before and after.

Will I lose quality?

A little, because JPG is lossy, but at 92 percent most people can't see it. For a perfect copy, convert to PNG instead.

Can browsers open BMP files?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari display BMP natively. A few rare variants may not display.

What happens to transparency in a 32-bit BMP?

JPG has no transparency, so those areas become white. Most BMP files are fully opaque anyway.

Is my BMP uploaded?

No. It's converted in your browser and never leaves your device.
