Drop Your Image Here

To crop an image, drag the box over the part you want to keep, choose a shape like 1:1 or 16:9 if you need one, and click Crop. Then download the result. It runs in your browser, so your picture isn't uploaded.

Why crop a photo?

  • Cut out empty space or something you don't want in the frame.
  • Make a square picture for a profile photo.
  • Match a slot such as a 16:9 video thumbnail or a 4:3 print.
  • Focus attention on the subject.

How to crop an image

  1. Click Select File, or drag your image into the drop zone.
  2. Drag the box to move it, and pull its corners to resize. Pick Free, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, or 3:2 to lock the shape.
  3. Click Crop, check the preview, then click Download.

Quality and format

Cropping keeps the pixels you select at their full resolution, so the part you keep is as sharp as the original. Only what's outside the box is discarded. The result is saved in the same format as your original.

Cropping changes what's in the frame. Resizing scales the whole picture instead. To end up with exact pixel dimensions, crop first, then use Image Resizer.

For choosing a format after cropping, see our image format guide.

Common crop shapes and what they are for

  • 1:1 is a square. It suits profile pictures and many social posts.
  • 16:9 is the wide shape of most screens and video thumbnails.
  • 4:3 is the classic shape of older screens, slides, and many compact cameras.
  • 3:2 is the shape of most digital camera photos and standard 4 by 6 inch prints.
  • Free lets you draw any rectangle, which is best when you're cutting out one detail.
