To add page numbers to a PDF, choose a format and a position, set the starting number if it isn't 1, and click Add Page Numbers. Every page is numbered in one pass, right in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Why add page numbers to a PDF?
A numbered document is easier to navigate, cite, and put back in order if the pages get printed and shuffled. Reports, theses, contracts, and exhibits are expected to have them.
It also helps in meetings. Saying turn to page 12 only works when page 12 is printed on the page.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Click Select File, or drag your PDF into the drop zone.
- Choose a format: 1, Page 1, 1 / 10, or Page 1 of 10. Pick a position and a font size, and change Start at if you need a different first number.
- Click Add Page Numbers, then Download.
Formats, positions, and starting numbers
You can place the number at the top or bottom, on the left, in the center, or on the right. Bottom center is the usual choice for reports. The Page 1 of 10 format tells readers how long the document is.
Start at is handy when your file continues from another document. Set it to 25 and the first page shows 25, the next 26, and so on. Numbers are added on top of each page, so the original content isn't touched.
Skipping the cover page and other tricks
- Skip the cover. Split it off with Split PDF, number the rest, then put it back with Merge PDF.
- Pages are out of order. Fix the order with Reorder PDF Pages before numbering, so the numbers follow the final order.
- You added numbers by mistake. They become part of the page once saved, so keep the original file.
- Need a stamp too? Add one with Add Watermark to PDF.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add page numbers to an existing PDF?
Drop the PDF into the tool, choose a format and position, and click Add Page Numbers. Then download the numbered copy. No software is needed.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the Start at field to any number, which helps when the file continues from another document.
Can I number pages as Page 1 of 10?
Yes. Choose the Page 1 of 10 format and the total is filled in for you.
Can I leave the first page unnumbered?
Not in one step. Split the cover off, number the remaining pages, then merge the cover back on. See the tip above.
Will it work on a scanned PDF?
Yes. The number is drawn on top of each page, so scans get numbered the same way as text pages.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The numbers are added in your browser and the file stays on your device.
