To crop a photo into a circle, upload it, zoom and position it inside the circle, and download a transparent PNG. It's ready for a profile picture. It runs in your browser, so your photo isn't uploaded.

Why crop a picture into a circle?

  • Profile pictures on social sites, chat apps, and team pages.
  • Author photos and avatars on a website.
  • Round icons and badges for design projects.
  • Any layout that shows people or logos in circles.

How to make a circular image

  1. Click Select File, or drag your photo into the drop zone.
  2. Choose Circle or Rounded square. Use Zoom and the left, right, up, and down sliders to place your subject in the frame.
  3. Pick an output size, then click Download PNG.

Transparency, size, and rounded corners

The corners outside the circle are transparent, so the PNG sits cleanly on any background. Choose Rounded square for soft corners, and set how round they are with the Corners slider. Zoom runs from 100 to 300 percent.

Output sizes are Full resolution (up to 4096 pixels), 1024, 512, 256, and 128. Most profile slots are fine with 512 or smaller. For a social site that fills the frame itself, a plain square crop can also work.

For when to use PNG, read our image format guide.

Tips for a good circular crop

Put the face or logo in the middle and leave a little space around it, since the circle cuts off the corners of the frame. Avoid text near the edge, because it gets clipped. Start from the largest picture you have, because a sharp source gives a sharp result even after cropping.

Profile pictures are often shown very small, sometimes only 40 pixels wide, so check that your subject is still recognizable when you zoom the preview out. A closer crop usually reads better than a wide one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a picture into a circle?

Upload it, choose Circle, position the photo with the sliders, and download the PNG.

Will the background be transparent?

Yes. The area outside the circle is transparent in the PNG.

Can I make rounded corners instead of a circle?

Yes. Choose Rounded square and adjust the Corners slider.

What size should I download?

512 pixels suits most profile pictures. Use Full resolution when you need the most detail.

Why is the file a PNG?
