When is PNG the right choice for a HEIC photo?
For everyday sharing, JPG is smaller and easier. PNG earns its place in a few situations:
- You'll edit the photo more, and don't want each save to add compression.
- You need a lossless copy of a moment you care about.
- Design tools ask for PNG.
- You plan to remove the background later and keep transparency.
If none of those apply, HEIC to JPG gives you a much smaller file.

Expect a much bigger file
HEIC compresses photos very efficiently. PNG stores every pixel, so a photo that was a couple of megabytes as HEIC can become several times larger. That's normal.
If the size gets in your way, convert to JPG instead, or shrink the PNG with Image Compressor. A PNG of a photo won't gain any detail over the HEIC. It just keeps the detail that's already there without losing more.
Tips and common problems
- Your photos are HEIC by default. Change the iPhone camera format to Most Compatible so new photos are JPG.
