When do you need a 1024x1024 image?

  • Apple's App Store listing icon, which is submitted at 1024 x 1024.
  • A reference or training image for an AI art tool. Stable Diffusion XL, for example, generates images at 1024 x 1024 by default.
  • An NFT or marketplace listing that asks for a square image at a set size.
  • A print-on-demand square, like a coaster, sticker, or album cover mockup.
  • Any profile photo or avatar slot that only accepts a square upload.

How to convert an image to 1024x1024

  1. Click Select File, or drag your image into the drop zone.
  2. Choose Cover, Contain, or Stretch, and pick a format.
  3. Click Convert, check the preview, then click Download.

Cover, contain, or stretch: which one to pick

Cover scales the photo up until it fills the whole square, then crops whatever sticks out past the edges. Nothing gets stretched, but the top and bottom or the sides may be trimmed. It's the right choice for most photos and for icons where the subject is centered.

Contain scales the photo down until it fits entirely inside the square, then adds a background color around the parts that don't reach the edge. Use it when nothing in the photo can be cropped, for example a screenshot or a logo with text near the edges.

Stretch resizes the photo to exactly 1024 by 1024 without keeping its proportions, so a photo that isn't already square will look squeezed or widened. It's only useful when the destination genuinely wants the pixels stretched, which is rare.

Format, background, and transparency

PNG keeps transparency and is lossless, which is the safer default for an icon or logo. JPG and WebP compress the result, which is smaller but can't store transparency at all, so any see-through area turns into the background color.

The background color fills the padding that Contain mode adds, and it also fills in for any transparent part of the source photo unless you turn on Keep Transparent Background. Many app icon and avatar upload forms reject a transparent image outright, so check what your platform accepts before you turn transparency on.

For PNG and WebP, Keep Transparent Background leaves the padding and any transparent pixels in the source as they are instead of filling them in.

Tips and common problems

  • The subject got cropped out. Switch from Cover to Contain, which never crops, and add a background color instead.
  • The result looks stretched. That means Stretch mode is selected and the source photo isn't square. Switch to Cover or Contain.
  • The result looks soft or blurry. The source photo is smaller than 1024 pixels on its short side, so it has to be enlarged, and enlarging can't add detail that isn't there. Start from the largest version of the photo you have.
  • An upload form rejected the file for having transparency. Turn off Keep Transparent Background, or switch to JPG, which has no transparency at all.

Frequently asked questions

What size is 1024x1024 used for?

It's the size Apple asks for when you submit an App Store listing icon, and a common size for AI art tools, NFT images, and print-on-demand squares. Many avatar and profile upload forms also expect a square image.

Will this crop my photo?

Only in Cover mode, which fills the square and trims whatever doesn't fit. Contain mode never crops; it fits the whole photo inside the square and pads the rest with a background color instead.

Can I keep a transparent background?

Yes, with PNG or WebP. Turn on Keep Transparent Background before you convert. JPG can't store transparency, so a JPG result always has a solid background.

Will my 1024x1024 image be accepted for an App Store icon?

This tool gets the pixel dimensions right, 1024 by 1024. Platforms change their exact submission rules over time, including format and transparency, so check the current requirements in App Store Connect before you submit.

Why does my converted image look stretched?

Stretch mode resizes to exactly 1024 by 1024 without keeping the original proportions. If your photo isn't already square, switch to Cover or Contain instead.

Does enlarging a small image to 1024x1024 hurt quality?

Yes, a little. Enlarging can't add detail that wasn't in the original, so a photo smaller than 1024 pixels on its short side will look softer after conversion. Shrinking a larger photo down doesn't have this problem.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The resize happens in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.
