You're at the save dialog and it wants an answer: PNG, JPG, or WebP? Most guides start with compression math. You don't need that to decide. What matters is what the picture is and where it's going, so this guide answers it by situation.
A Logo or Icon: Pick PNG
Logos and icons are flat colors with sharp edges, and they often need a see-through background. PNG keeps all of that. The edges stay crisp, and you can open and save the file as many times as you like without damage.
JPG blurs sharp edges a little and can't do transparency at all. It's the wrong choice here, even though it makes smaller files.
A Photo: Pick JPG, or WebP if You Can
Photos have smooth gradients in skies, skin, and shadows. Both JPG and WebP handle that well. Google's own comparisons put lossy WebP about 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPG at similar quality.
JPG is still the safe default. Email apps, printers, and old software all open it. Choose WebP only when you control where the file ends up.
A Website: WebP for Photos, PNG for Graphics
Use WebP for photos and big header images. Use PNG for logos, icons, and anything with a transparent background. Smaller images load sooner, and load speed affects both visitors and search results. Google measures it with a score called Largest Contentful Paint.
Every current browser can show WebP, which was the old reason to avoid it. If your choice is just WebP or PNG, our WebP vs PNG guide compares the two in detail, with file size numbers.
Which Format for Which Use Case
| Use Case | Best Format |
|---|---|
| Logo or icon | PNG |
| Website photo or hero image | WebP |
| Email attachment | JPG |
| Social media photo | JPG |
| Print material | PNG or high-quality JPG |
Print: PNG or Top-Quality JPG
Skip WebP for print. Print shops and design programs are built around older formats, and support for WebP is uneven. For something you only get one physical copy of, don't take the risk. Save as PNG, or as a JPG at the highest quality setting.
Renaming a File Is Not Converting It
Changing photo.png to photo.jpg does not turn it into a JPG. The data inside is still PNG. Some programs will refuse to open it, and others just ignore the mismatch. An extension is a label. To get a real JPG, WebP, or PNG, the picture has to be re-saved by a converter.
Still Not Sure? Compare Them
Convert the same picture into two formats and look at the sizes and the results side by side. Our Image Converter does that in your browser, so you can test your own image instead of guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, PNG or JPG?
Neither one wins every time. They're built for different pictures. PNG is better for logos, icons, screenshots, and anything with transparency. JPG is better for photos, where it makes much smaller files that look the same to most people.
Is WebP better than PNG and JPG?
For file size at the same look, usually yes. But some upload forms, print shops, and older programs still don't accept WebP. JPG and PNG almost never cause that problem.
What's the difference between lossy and lossless?
Lossy formats like JPG throw away small details to save space, and you can't get them back. Lossless formats like PNG keep every pixel, so the file is bigger. WebP can work either way.
Can I convert PNG to WebP without losing quality?
Yes. WebP has a lossless mode, so a PNG saved that way keeps every pixel and usually comes out smaller. Lossy WebP, like lossy JPG, drops some detail.
Which format is best for email?
JPG for photos and PNG for screenshots. Both open in every email app and on every phone. WebP can fail to show in older email programs.
Why does my browser not show a WebP image?
Every current major browser supports WebP, so the cause is usually an outdated browser or a damaged file. If the file itself is fine, try updating the browser first.
